Urban Regeneration

What is Urban Regeneration?

Urban regeneration involves the improvement of physical space within urban areas. Common examples include environmental improvement (EI) schemes, streetscapes, master-plans and development briefs. This occurs continuously on various scales and is primarily public sector led and financed. McGarry Consulting have worked on almost 40 urban regeneration economic appraisals (business cases) in conjunction with local architects, Councils and government departments.

How does Urban Regeneration differ between towns?

Although many urban areas share common concerns (e.g. deprivation, derelict buildings, under investment, dis-jointed development), each area requires a unique solution. McGarry Consulting are familiar with industry best practice, community engagement and dealing with design teams and are thus able to present an independent, objective and authoritative appraisal of need and potential options for clients. This is important in when dealing with departmental economists and securing public funds.

How can you prove the benefits of urban regeneration?

As public bodies become increasingly conscious of securing value for money, we have also the experience and the quantitative and qualitative research to demonstrate the effectiveness of urban regeneration schemes in the UK. We can compare examples of successful schemes from around the world whilst also highlighting potential problems (e.g. maintenance of natural stone) and risks that are not obvious but can have a major impact on the project.
