Environmental Policy

McGarry Consulting try to be environmentally friendly in everything we do. We aspire to live by the philosophy of "reduce, re-use and recycle"; primarily through better management and more effective use of technology and renewable energy. It doesn't always work. As part of our original green ethos, in 2007 we began reporting our environmental targets every 6 months on our website. We started off well but then faltered as we weren't sure what to do next. So we have gone back to basics, tried to keep things simple and spent some money.

5 Simple Aims

To this end our environmental policy consists of 5 simple aims:
  • Prioritise environmentally friendly policies, products and services, including fair trade goods
  • No Printing Rule. Electronically transfer documents and were printing is required to use recycled paper and print 2 pages per sheet were possible
  • Use technology more effectively, such as Skype to reduce the need to travel
  • Continually seek to 'reduce, re-use and recycle' in and out of the office
  • As far as possible be consistent with partner environmental policies and best practice
How effective have we been?

We'd like to say, we're carbon neutral and have saved half a rain forest but that is probably not the case. We do recycle, and over the last 4 years have taken steps - lagging the roof, and got more eco-friendly windows, lights and even lower emission car. However, we have also made mistakes and could have done more.  Therefore to tie in with the launch of the new website, we're starting a fresh.

What's new?

From September 2011, we're going to try and keep things nice and simple:

"For every new project we will plant one tree in Northern Ireland with the Woodland Trust and ten trees outside Europe with Trees for the Future."

We will try this for a year and review in 2012. To get off to a good start, we have already:

  • Dedicated a wood, or more precisely a quarter acre of woodland in Belvoir Forest, Northern Ireland through the Woodland Trust; and
  • Provided funding to Trees for the Future to plant 1,000 trees across the globe
Anything else?

We will continually try to improve our environmental policy and monitoring. We may not always get there and will probably fall short at times, but we'll try and will always be open to feedback and new ideas. Finally we urge you to check out the great work being done by the Woodland Trust and especially Trees for the Future.
